Improving the health status of women

After a decade, our service goes global!

Our longest running & perhaps most famous service project is the Zonta Breast Care Cushion.

A Club member designed the cushion in 1994 after hearing from a guest speaker about the difficulty of recovering from breast surgery. Her idea was to give post-operative comfort to women and thereby aid their recovery.

Zonta Breast Care Cushion in useSince then, thousands of women in New South Wales and around Australia have benefited from this project.  Many women find the cushion very comfortable when resting and sleeping, others also wear it under loose fitting outer garments.

The Zonta Breast Care Cushion aids recovery by assisting the woman to able to relax and sleep, as well as by preventing hurt from bumps while walking around and any discomfort from wearing seatbelts.

Since the project started, our Club has made a pile of these cushions higher than the Sydney landmark, the Centrepoint Tower.

In 2002, Zonta International District 24 took this up as a District project and District 23 followed suit shortly thereafter. The Zonta Club of Sydney Breakfast (at left) is one of the many in Australia making Zonta Breast Care Cushions.

Later on in 2005, District 16 (New Zealand) joined in the effort. To facilitate this, the Club redeveloped the patterns and instructions for assembly into a package able to be delivered via the internet.

Since then, Zonta Clubs in countries as diverse as Germany, Canada, the USA and Macedonia have contacted the Zonta Club of Botany Bay to get their project up & going.
